I have chosen to concentrate on the buckfast bee, it is a bee that is a cross between different races in order to be able to produce the best characteristics from each breed. As the buckfast bee father Brother Adam said "more honey, less work"
My breeding goals are:
- High resistance to diseases
- Swarm inertia
- Good honey harvest
- Calm bees that are pleasant to work with
In addition, I think it is important that the bees lift the honey over the fry, therefore test queens have no barrier grid the first part of the season, then you see if they keep order in the hive, which gives much less work for the beekeeper. If you want to produce your own queens, but don't want to do the time-consuming breeding work, island mated queens might be the way to go. No to queens have the same characteristics, even though they have the same mother and drone pool. Therefore we recommend buying at least 3 sisterqueens, evaluate them and choose the best. This can easily mean 5-10 kg difference in yield per colony.
